Practice Permit Test

How it works

How this site is built

Each state's driver's handbook is the source. We break it into individual rules, write each rule in our own plain words, and check every one against the handbook text with a second, independent pass. Rules that don't match the handbook exactly, like a number that's off or an exception that's dropped, are thrown out rather than patched by hand.

Practice questions are written only from those checked rules. Before a question is published, it's answered again from the rules alone, without the answer key. Any question where the rules don't settle the answer, or where a second option could be argued, is thrown out.

The Ask feature uses an AI model (Claude, made by Anthropic) that's given only those checked rules. It answers in two or three sentences, names the handbook section, and says so when the handbook doesn't cover your question.

We restate the handbooks; we don't republish them. Handbook wording belongs to each state. For the official text, read your state's handbook. We link to it on every state page.

Practice Permit Test isn't affiliated with any DMV. Rules change, and if you find something wrong, the handbook wins.
