License basics
- Having a California driver's license is what gives you permission to drive on public roads.
- To get a California driver's license, you have to pass both a knowledge test and a behind-the-wheel driving test, which are based on the handbook.
License classes
- The license you hold must match the type of vehicle you are driving.
- Most drivers only need a Class C license, which is a noncommercial license.
- Driving a commercial vehicle, a motorcycle, or certain other vehicle types requires a license class other than Class C.
REAL ID
- Starting in May 2025, you need a REAL ID compliant driver's license or ID card if you want to use it to get on a domestic flight.
- Starting in May 2025, a REAL ID compliant license or ID card is required if you use it to get onto a military base.
- Starting in May 2025, a REAL ID compliant license or ID card is required if you use it to enter most federal facilities.
Undocumented residents
- California issues driver's licenses to all of its residents, no matter what their immigration status is.
Card designations
- A driver's license can carry a Veteran designation, which comes with its own requirements and benefits.
ID cards
- An ID card is for identification only and does not allow you to drive.
- Eligible people of any age can be issued an ID card.
- To get an ID card, you must provide an identity document, residency documents, and your social security number.
- Reduced-fee, no-fee, and senior ID cards are available.
